Armadio Genovese, c. 1890 Genova
Solid walnut with some decorative elements in beech. Having its provenance in the shipping port of Genova, this piece is an excellent representation of the Genovese people’s connection to the sea. Extraordinary carvings decorate the entire piece, beginning with dentil and egg-and dart moldings indicative of the renaissance style. Door panels are adorned with geometric carvings and central rosettes, surrounded by a scroll-and-wave border. The foundation is supported by unique feet in the shape of dragons’ heads. The outer supports display the most ornate carvings, including waves, acanthus leaves and fluted brackets bearing the likeness of a man, most probably a shipping merchant or sea captain for whom this piece was commissioned.
