Cassettone Umbertino Bureau, c. 1890 Torino
Solid walnut and walnut veneers, interior in solid walnut. Named for King Umberto I, the then-reigning King of Italy, and several outlying territories. Originally used as a chest-of-drawers in a dressing room, this piece also lends itself well to use as a buffet/server. The workmanship of this piece attests to the superb skill of the woodcarver/cabinetmaker. Surmounted by a mirror framed in elaborately carved walnut with a flower and curl motif. The mirror is supported by two small drawers used for holding jewelry. Three intaglio-carved dovetail drawers top two ornately sculpted doors that open to reveal three more full-width dovetail drawers. Scroll carving on outside supports, extensive use of stepped moldings and onion feet make this a finely-crafted heirloom.
