Credenza Buffet, c.1890 Piemonte

Substantial credenza/buffet in solid walnut and walnut veneers.  Built in the Renaissance style, this piece has considerable presence.  Thick slab top with geometric carving on the edges.   Wide stepped molding and rope-carved trim throughout.  Two ornate intaglio-carved drawers with solid rosette knobs and dovetailed joinery.   Two paneled doors are centered with elaborately carved rosettes.  Supported by massive lion’s paw feet.  The side supports bear two caryatids in the form of benevolently laughing Satyrs, thought to scare away evil spirits.
