Savonarola Chair, c.1890 Genova
Solid Beech, carved in the Renaissance style. The design of this chair dates back to the time of Caesar’s conquest, when the need for portable, packable furnishings was first married with attractive design. The back of the chair is carved with exceptional flourishes of acanthus leaves and fleur-de-lis, topped with a shell-carved capital. The arms are carved in a geometric theme, and end in a ball-shaped finial encircled by a free-rotating ring, all sculpted from a single piece of wood. This is a piece that allows the highly-skilled woodworker to showcase his talents, as evidenced by the arm carvings, and the precision-fitting of the scissor-type folding action of the chair.
